How the sports world reacted to LeBron James building a school in his hometown
"This is one SUPERSTAR that gets it."
On Monday, the I Promise School opened its doors for the first time. Located just a few blocks down from where LeBron James became a high school sensation at St. Vincent-St. Mary’s, the new school is a joint venture between the Los Angeles Lakers star and Akron Public Schools.
The school will welcome 240 third- and fourth-graders this year, before expanding to grades 1-8 by 2022. In addition to the normal curriculum, I Promise will provide resources to students’ families and include an on-site food bank.
“The jitters before the first day of school are real right now!!! Tomorrow is going to be one of the greatest moments (if not the greatest) of my life,” James tweeted Sunday night.
Here’s how figures from around the sports world reacted to the 3-time NBA champion’s latest success:

Not only did LeBron James exceed all expectations despite being in the national spotlight since he was 12. Not only did he bring his friends along with him. But he continuously demonstrates real thoughtfulness & sincerity around issues of justice. You can’t help but be impressed.
