The biggest Red Sox question mark heading into 2026: The 2026 MLB season begins on Wednesday, with the Red Sox opening the team’s schedule on Thursday in Cincinnati against the Reds.
Before an inning is played, numerous predictions have already been made, including the challenges that teams will inevitably face.
For the Red Sox, the single biggest question mark could be a fairly straightforward concept: Will they get enough offense from the current roster?
Specifically, who will be the team’s sluggers? This was a point raised by MLB.com Red Sox reporter Ian Browne in a larger piece about each team’s “big unknown” heading into the season.
“Where will the power come from?” asked Browne, succinctly.
“The answer could be from the blossoming young core led by Roman Anthony, Wilyer Abreu, and Ceddanne Rafaela,” Browne added. “Veterans Jarren Duran, Contreras and Trevor Story are others who might exceed power projections.”
Red Sox manager Alex Cora recently predicted that one of the names on that list (Abreu) would be the player to break the 30-home-run threshold, though it remains to be seen who else in the group of potential sluggers could join Abreu in helping to shoulder the burden of producing Boston offense.
Trivia: What player did the Red Sox trade to the Astros in exchange for Wilyer Abreu and Enmanuel Valdez in 2022?
(Answer at the bottom.)
Hint: Catcher.

An interesting documentary coming to Netflix: A trailer for an upcoming documentary about the early 2000s Portland Trail Blazers was recently released. The doc will land April 14 on Netflix.
On this day: In 1947, Holy Cross men’s basketball won the NCAA Tournament by defeating Oklahoma 58-47. The Crusaders, in what has proven to be an otherwise unprecedented achievement by some measure, rolled to a 27-3 record under legendary coach Doggie Julian.
In the title game, Holy Cross were paced by George Kaftan 18 points. Freshman guard Bob Cousy contributed two points despite going 0-for-9 from the field.

Daily highlight: Here’s a satisfyingly placed goal from Lauren James in the UEFA Women’s Champions League quarterfinals on Tuesday, though Chelsea went on to lose to Arsenal 3-1.
