Tufts triumph in the clutch: For the fifth time in program history, Tufts (20-1-3) men’s soccer are national champions. The latest came on Sunday via a dramatic 2-1 victory over Trinity University of Texas at Kerr Stadium at Roanoke College.
Trailing 1-0 with less than 10 seconds remaining, the Jumbos achieved a miraculous equalizer when senior Mateo Bargagna lashed a volley into the upper left corner of the goal.

After Trinity outshot (8-2) and outplayed Tufts for large sections of the first half (taking a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute). In the second half, the Jumbos rallied, outshooting Trinity 16-7 as they hunted a tying goal. At almost the very last possible moment, Bargagna delivered.
It’s the fifth title in program history for Tufts men’s soccer, the team’s first since 2019. Tufts now have the second most Division 3 national championships of any school aside from the 11 of Messiah University.
