Red Sox seen as ‘strongest contender’ to sign Pete Alonso away from Mets

The latest from the Red Sox hot stove: The Red Sox are currently immersed in what is expected to be an eventful offseason, with several major roster decisions set to be made.

One of the prominent questions facing Boston is the status of infielder Alex Bregman. The 31-year-old signed with the Red Sox last offseason, but opted out of his original three-year deal following the 2026 season. Whether or not he re-signs is a point of major importance, tied also to the rumored addition of another infield veteran: Pete Alonso.

Alonso, 30, is a free agent after declining his player option with the Mets. He hit 38 home runs (with an .871 OPS) in 2025, and MLB Network reporter Jon Morosi sees him as a vital addition. The outcome of Bregman’s decision about his landing spot could have a direct impact on the potential Red Sox pursuit of Alonso.

“Big priority,” Morosi said of Boston’s aim to get Bregman back on the roster.

“Either they bring back Bregman, or they make an all-out pursuit for Pete Alonso. I like their chances to get one or the other,” said Morosi.

He also pointed out that the crowded depth chart of outfielders could help the Red Sox in addressing another offseason priority.

“The Red Sox have an abundance of outfielders, and they could potentially move one of those outfield bats to the Marlins to bring back a pitcher,” Morosi theorized, “and then focus on bringing back Bregman or Pete Alonso in free agency.”

“I look at the big landscape of things,” Morosi concluded, “and I think the Red Sox are the strongest contender of anyone to take Pete Alonso away from the New York Mets.”

He added one more interesting point: Alonso and Bregman are both represented by noted MLB agent Scott Boras.

“By the way, as we talk about all these different potential moves and conversations and leverage: Remember this, Pete Alonso, Alex Bregman, same agent: Scott Boras.”

On this day: In 1997, the Red Sox completed a blockbuster trade. Boston general manager Dan Duquette sent pitching prospects Carl Pavano and Tony Armas Jr. to the Expos in exchange for the recently named National League Cy Young Award winner, Pedro Martinez.

Landing the dazzlingly talented Martinez proved to be one of the best trades in Boston sports history, as he went on to win two more Cy Young trophies amid an incredible run of dominance even at the height of baseball’s “steroid era.” Martinez’s final start with the Red Sox (prior to leaving as a free agent) was in the victorious 2004 World Series run.
