Mike Vrabel is not a fan of media leaks: Following his team’s final preseason game (a loss to the Giants), Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel was in a somewhat feisty mood.
Having already sparred with Patriots announcer Scott Zolak prior to the game about a separate Thursday report regarding possible trades, Vrabel was asked about the apparent news that wide receiver Ja’Lynn Polk would have season-ending surgery on his shoulder.
Does he have anything to add about Polk?
“No,” Vrabel replied. “Other than I’d like to find out where some of these [reports] come from. Some of these rats around here. So, we’ll figure that out.”
Like many coaches, Vrabel has subscribed in the past to specific rules about how his team should speak with the media. In particular, disclosing details about injuries is forbidden.
Prior to kickoff, he disputed Zolak’s characterization of a report that the team is considering trading defensive players Kyle Dugger and Anfernee Jennings.
“I don’t know, you reported a lot of things that may not have been true,” Vrabel told 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Zolak, per MassLive’s Mark Daniels. “So I wouldn’t put a lot of stock in the reports that go around. You know that better than anybody.”
Trivia: As was recently noted by fantasy football writer Andrew Cooper (whose tweet is linked with the answer at the bottom), the Patriots have struggled to develop wide receivers that the team has drafted over the past 15 years. Can you name the wide receiver selected by New England in the NFL Draft since 2010 who has the most career fantasy points in that span?
(Answer at the bottom.)
Hint: He made zero catches in his lone (rookie) season in New England, but has gone on to more success elsewhere in the AFC East.
Scores and schedules:
The Red Sox defeated the Yankees 6-3 in the opening game of a four-game series on Thursday night. The two teams play again today at 7:05 p.m. at Yankee Stadium.
The Patriots lost to the Giants 42-10 in the team’s final preseason game on Thursday. New England will open the regular season at home on Sept. 7 against the Raiders.
And the Revolution will travel to face the Columbus Crew on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Unusual surfing conditions: While it’s best left to the experts, the surfing conditions created by Hurricane Erin resulted in some impressive footage via the Nantucket Current.

On this day: In 2009, the Red Sox clobbered the Yankees 14-1. Kevin Youkilis hit two home runs and totaled six RBIs.
Daily highlight: Amid questions about his future in New England, Kyle Dugger made a nice end zone interception against the Giants on Thursday.
