Celtics waive JD Davison: The Celtics waived guard JD Davison on Thursday in the latest cost-cutting move to avoid one of the more intense aspects of the league’s luxury tax.
Davison, 22, was a second-round pick in 2022 out of Alabama. Despite becoming a central figure for the Maine Celtics — winning G League MVP in the most recent season — he was unable to find a consistent spot with the NBA-level squad. Davison played in 36 games over the course of three seasons with the Celtics, averaging 1.9 points.
Though the Celtics reportedly picked up his contract option in June, the deal was non-guaranteed. Now, Davison, who averaged 25.6 points and 7.7 assists for Maine last season, will have a chance to make an NBA roster elsewhere.
For the Celtics, shedding Davison’s $2.27 salary puts the team below the league salary cap’s second apron. Much of Boston’s offseason to this point, including the decisions to trade Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis, has been animated by the goal of avoiding the secondary component of the league’s luxury tax.
With the waiving of Davison, the Celtics have reportedly achieved the goal of getting under the tax threshold. The move also leaves Boston with an open roster spot, though “no other [Celtics] moves are imminent,” according to Boston Globe Celtics reporter Adam Himmelsbach.
