Marcelo Mayer’s reaction to first MLB month: After being called up by the Red Sox in May, infield prospect Marcelo Mayer is continuing to adjust to the Major League level.
“I feel good,” Mayer told NESN in an interview prior to Wednesday’s game against the Mariners. “Obviously, it’s my first time seeing these arms. Every day is a new arm I’ve never seen before, but I’m doing a really good job of doing my homework before the game and making sure that I’m putting myself in the best possible situation to help the team win.”
While the 22-year-old Mayer hasn’t exactly torn the cover off the baseball in his first few weeks (hitting .220 with a .277 OBP), he’s hit four home runs and holds a more respectable .751 OPS.
As he explained, it’s about “hitting the ball hard.”
“Any time I’m hitting the ball hard, it’s telling me that I’m swinging at good pitches,” Mayer noted. “So, as long as I keep that going, I think I’m going to be in a really good spot.”
True to his instincts, Mayer swatted a home run later in the win over the Mariners.
