Rob Refsnyder’s tough assessment of the Red Sox: The Red Sox dropped to 27-29 following Monday’s 3-2 loss to the Brewers. Boston is currently fourth in the American League East, 7.5 games behind the division-leading Yankees.
Despite a continued level of optimism about the team’s future, the present appears to be a frustrating experience for fans and—as outfielder Rob Refsnyder bluntly described following the Memorial Day loss—players too. The 34-year-old outfielder was unable to hold back his straightforward thoughts about the state of things when asked about the team’s “promise” amid another defeat.
“We still lost. I don’t really care about promise,” Refsnyder said after the game.
“It’s frustrating,” he admitted. “Tired of losing. Tired of losing close games. We just need to figure it out and win some games. Bottom line.”
Refsnyder noted that it was “disappointing” that the team couldn’t get starting pitcher Garrett Crochet a better result after the 25-year-old struck out 11 and only yielded two runs over 6.2 innings.
“We’re just not getting the job done,” said Refsnyder. “It’s not for lack of effort, work ethic, or game-planning. It’s just, we’re not doing it. We suck right now. We’ve got to just be better.”
“I am confident things are going to turn around,” he concluded. “There is a lot of talent here and promise, but right now it’s just execution, from me to everyone. We just have to play better.”

Team USA wins gold: The U.S. men’s hockey team, including several Bruins, won hockey’s World Championship for the first time since 1933 over the weekend. The U.S. defeated Switzerland 1-0 in overtime on a Tage Thompson goal to clinch the 2025 IIHF World Championship.
“This is my cheese”: Bavarian Tom Kopke defended his title in one of the world’s most unique sporting events: The Cooper’s Hill Cheese-Rolling and Wake in England. Racers “run” down the steep hill in pursuit of a wheel of Double Gloucester cheese.
“All the people at the top said they were going to steal my title but this is mine,” he told reporters. “I worked for this. I risked my life for this. It’s my cheese. Back to back.”
Ava Sender Logan won the women’s race, though she candidly admitted afterward that she doesn’t actually like cheese.

On this day: In 2023, Derrick White tipped it in at the buzzer to give the Celtics an improbable 104-103 win over the Heat in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals. Boston would go on to lose Game 7, but White’s dramatic winner remains one of the more clutch postseason plays in recent Celtics history.
Daily highlight: Heidenheim avoided relegation from Germany’s Bundesliga in the final seconds on Sunday thanks to a stoppage time goal from Léo Scienza.
