The NFL and the Olympics: Flag football will make its Olympic debut at the Los Angeles Summer Games in 2028, and the NFL is set to move one step closer to allowing its players to participate in the international competition.
According to multiple reports, including both ESPN’s Adam Schefter and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, league owners are poised to vote on Tuesday in favor of allowing league players to participate in the sport’s Olympic debut.
“It like there’s momentum toward getting this thing done, getting NFL players to participate in the Olympics, playing flag football,” Rapoport said. “I cannot believe these are real sentences that we are saying, but this is really where we are, and this is the general feeling from the league.”
The details still need to be worked out, but in general terms, it’s expected that at a basic level:
On top of that, other rules are expected to be implemented regarding player safety (with medical staff requirements and injury insurance policies). The Los Angeles Summer Games are set to open on July 14, 2028, running until July 30.
