Travis Hunter and the latest Patriots mock draft: The NFL Draft is a little over a month away (the first round begins on April 24), and the intrigue continues to swirl around who the Patriots might take with the fourth overall pick.
In the latest round of the ongoing slate of mock drafts, ESPN NFL Draft guru Mel Kiper Jr. projects that New England will take Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter.
Hunter, 21, is coming off one of the more impressively versatile seasons in recent college football history. As a wide receiver, he totaled 92 receptions for 1,152 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns (adding an additional touchdown on the ground). As a cornerback, Hunter also contributed four interceptions and a forced fumble.
As an all-action player, he essentially never left the field playing under Deion Sanders at Colorado. Adding him to any component of the Patriots’ setup would be a tantalizing prospect for new head coach Mike Vrabel.
Given the Patriots’ need at wide receiver, Hunter would be a welcomed addition.
“While Hunter could absolutely play cornerback in the NFL, I have him ranked as a receiver, where he can pick apart opponents with his ball skills, quickness and instincts,” wrote Kiper.
“I just really like the fit in the Patriots’ offense with quarterback Drake Maye,” he concluded.
Granted, New England also has an array of needs on the offensive line, and as tempting as picking an exciting prospect like Hunter could be, a committed approach to building the line might be what the Patriots end up doing.
This could also be true if a team in picks 1-3 ends up selecting Hunter, since (as Kiper noted) exactly what the Titans do with the first overall pick remains a mystery.
