Experts’ grades for Bruins trade: The Bruins got a head start on the NHL trade deadline (set for 3 p.m. on Friday, March 7) with a Tuesday deal in which Boston sent forward Trent Frederic to Edmonton.
In full terms, the Bruins sent Frederic to the Oilers along with Max Jones in a three-way deal that also involved the Devils. Boston received a 2025 second-round pick, a 2026 fourth-round pick, and defenseman Max Wanner.
Here’s how NHL experts graded the deal:
Harman Dayal: B+
“The Bruins picked up two valuable draft picks for a player who was likely to walk in free agency and was having an offensive down year,” wrote Dayal. “Offloading Max Jones is a nice piece of business, too.”
Shayna Goldman: B-
“As close as Boston may seem to the playoff picture right now — sitting two points outside of the second wild card seed — the reality is that this team is not strong enough to do real damage in the postseason,” said Goldman. “Sometimes, a team has to step back before it can move forward. After years of contending and poor drafting, the Bruins need to start resetting for next season. Adding two draft picks allows the Bruins to do that, whether management uses the picks in the drafts or as trade assets.”
Adam Herman: A
“The second-round pick belongs to the St. Louis Blues, meaning it will end up towards the middle of the round,” wrote Herman. “That, plus a fourth-round pick, is the type of return usually reserved for an impact top-six forward. It’s tough to see how Bruins fans could have expected any better from this move.
Ryan S. Clark and Greg Wyshynski: A-
“Wanner is a 21-year-old, right-shooting defenseman who spent the past two seasons with the AHL Bakersfield Condors,” Clark and Wyshynski wrote of the prospect Boston acquired in the deal. “He was buried on the Oilers’ depth chart, having struggled through a season that saw him miss time due to injury. Not a bad prospect for the Bruins to get into their pipeline.”
Jacob Billington: A
“Frederic, an upcoming free agent, fits the mould of what the Bruins have been for quite some time, but considering he is out for most of the rest of the regular season, wasn’t going to help the Bruins get there,” Billington observed. “Of course, the picks aren’t either, but it was a very smart decision to move on from him and bring in a pretty impressive haul.”
Scores and schedules:
The Bruins lost 6-3 to the Predators on Tuesday. Boston will play the Hurricanes in Carolina on Thursday at 7 p.m.
Today, the Red Sox play the Rays in a spring training game at 1:05 p.m.
The Celtics play the Trail Blazers at TD Garden this evening at. 7 p.m.
The Boston Fleet host the New York Sirens at the Tsongas Center tonight at 7 p.m.

Tough day for the Crusaders: Holy Cross baseball surrendered an NCAA record 23 runs in a single inning during a 26-6 loss to George Mason on Tuesday.

On this day: In 1961, the Celtics defeated the Philadelphia Warriors 146-129 thanks to Bill Russell’s 37 points and 25 rebounds. While Wilt Chamberlain scored more points (leading the game with 47), it was Russell’s Celtics that came out on top.
Elsewhere, the Canadiens defeated the Bruins 2-1.

Daily highlight: Partly as an homage to Bill Belichick, here’s a Rutgers highlight (via an awesome Ace Bailey dunk). The Scarlet Knights lost in the end, however, falling to Purdue 100-71.
