Red Sox agree to 2025 deals with three of four arbitration-eligible players: Boston was able to avoid arbitration with Garrett Crochet, Tanner Houck, and Kutter Crawford for the 2025 season ahead of Thursday’s loose deadline, but one star remains without a deal.

Jarren Duran and the team weren’t able to come to terms on a deal for the 2025 season prior to the arbitration deadline, the Red Sox confirmed late Thursday. Boston and Duran were $500,000 off on their arbitration figure submissions on Thursday. Duran filed a $4 million salary request for the 2025 season while the Red Sox filed a $3.5 million salary for Duran in 2025, The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier reported.

Duran was arguably the Red Sox’ top player in 2024. The outfielder hit .285 with a .834 OPS, 21 home runs, and 75 RBIs. He also led the league in doubles (48) and triples (14), while his 34 stolen bases were a team-high.

As Duran electrified at the plate and on the basepaths, he earned his first All-Star nod. His homer in the All-Star Game helped him win MVP for the game as well. He also earned an All-MLB Second Team nod.

Duran, 28, is still under team control through the end of the 2028 season. The 2025 season is the first year Duran is arbitration-eligible, which is why his salary figure is relatively low for a player of his caliber.

The Red Sox and Duran have until mid January to agree to a contract number for the 2025 season before the situation is settled by an arbitrator ahead of spring training.

As for the three arbitration-eligible players who received deals, Houck earned the highest salary among the three players. He and the Red Sox settled at a $3.95 million salary for the 2025 season. Like Duran, the 28-year-old Houck was also a first-time All-Star in 2024. He went 9-10 with a 3.12 ERA, 1.142 WHIP, and 154 strikeouts over 30 starts last season. Houck is under team control through the end of the 2027 season.

The recently acquired Crochet received a $3.8 million salary for the 2025 season. Crochet, who was an All-Star with the White Sox in 2024, went 6-12 with a 3.58 ERA, 1.068 WHIP, and 209 strikeouts in 32 starts last season. The 25-year-old lefty is under team control through the end of the 2026 season.

Finally, Crawford earned a $2.75 million salary for the 2025 season. He went 9-16 with a 4.36 ERA, 1.122 WHIP, and 175 strikeouts in 33 starts, an MLB high. The 28-year-old has four seasons remaining of team control.

Trivia: Duran led all of MLB in triples last season with 14. Who was the last Red Sox player to lead the league in triples?

(Hint: He also played center field).

NFL playoff game location moved

As wildfires continue to impact Southern California, Monday’s game between the Vikings and Rams will no longer take place at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. The league announced that it was moving the game to State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.

Which NFL teams will host games in London next season?

The Jets and Browns, along with the Jaguars, will be the host teams for the three NFL games in London during the 2025 season, the league announced on Friday. The Patriots face the Browns in 2025, but they’ll host them in Foxborough. Of course, they also play the Jets twice. However, divisional games aren’t picked to be played in international matchups by the NFL, making it unlikely the Patriots will play in London again in 2025.

Highlight of the day

Notre Dame took down Penn State, 27-24, in the Orange Bowl with a last-minute interception and field goal giving it the victory. But in order to tie the game in the fourth quarter, Notre Dame needed a big play from its offense. It got it. Trailing 24-17 at the time, Notre Dame wide receiver Jaden Greathouse made a pair of ankle-breaking moves to get open and to later break a tackle to score a 56-yard touchdown.

On this day

Ten years ago on Friday, the Patriots picked up one of their more exciting wins in franchise history. They came back from a pair of 14-point deficits to defeat the Ravens in the AFC Divisional Round, 35-31.

The memorable play of the game was Julian Edelman’s 51-yard touchdown pass to Danny Amendola in the third quarter. Tom Brady threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Brandon LaFell that gave the Patriots their first lead of the game in the fourth quarter. Duron Harmon came up with a major interception in the final minutes of the fourth quarter before Baltimore’s Hail Mary attempt was swatted away.

Trivia answer: Jacoby Ellsbury in 2009 (10, tied with Denard Span)
