Rex Ryan’s impression of Drake Maye: Former Jets and Bills head coach Rex Ryan has made it clear over the years that he is not a fan of the Patriots. And even after recently criticizing Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo, Ryan took time on Monday morning to credit New England’s rookie quarterback, Drake Maye.
Speaking on an ESPN “Get Up!” segment, Ryan reluctantly credited Maye amid discussion of the Patriots’ loss in overtime to the Titans. After showing footage of Maye’s end-of-regulation scramble and desperation touchdown pass — which kept the Patriots alive and forced overtime — Ryan eventually offered his take on New England’s quarterback situation.
“By the way, I hated this play,” Ryan began. “You know why I hated the play? Because this kid for New England is a stud.
“This quarterback’s a stud,” Ryan reiterated. “I hate to see it.”
Ryan has made no secret during previous appearances on ESPN in his delight at seeing the Patriots struggle. He dismissively nicknamed previous Patriots quarterback Mac Jones as “Peashooter,” a derogatory reference to Jones’s apparent lack of arm strength.
In Maye, who was selected third overall by the Patriots in 2024 NFL Draft, New England has another highly-touted young quarterback. And while Jones managed to make the playoffs as a rookie in 2021, Maye appears to be winning over some of the Patriots’ harshest critics, even in defeat.
Trivia: Drake Maye came close to a Patriots record for rushing yards in a single game by a quarterback. His total of 95 yards ranks behind Babe Parilli’s 96 yards in a game in 1964 and what other quarterback (who holds the team record with 103 rushing yards)?
(Answer at the bottom.)
Hint: He did it in 1976.

The Patriots’ best moment from Sunday: Without question, it was Drake Maye’s touchdown pass to Rhamondre Stevenson with no time remaining in regulation.

More on Maye’s play: The rookie quarterback’s ability to evade defenders and create time for his receivers went to near-historic levels. According to Next Gen Stats, Maye extended the play for nearly 12 seconds. It was the second-longest time to throw a touchdown pass on a play since Next Gen began measuring stats in 2016.
Drake Maye scrambled for 11.82 seconds before finding Rhamondre Stevenson in the end zone for a 5-yard, game-tying touchdown, the 2nd-longest time to throw on a TD pass in the NGS era (since 2016), trailing only Jayden Daniels' Hail Mary from one week ago.

On this day: In 1970, the Celtics won a wild one against the 76ers, 115-113. Boston squandered double-digit leads and trailed by six with less than four minutes to go, but managed to rally for the narrow victory.
John Havlicek led the young Boston roster with 37 points, 18 rebounds, and nine assists.

Daily highlight: Aside from Maye’s heroics for the Patriots, one of the other standout plays from Sunday belonged to Eagles running back Saquon Barkley, who somehow managed to hurdle a defender while facing the other direction.
