Bill Belichick’s latest swipe at the Jets: Former Patriots (and Jets) head coach Bill Belichick was once again a guest on the “ManningCast” for the Monday Night Football broadcast.

Joining Eli and Peyton Manning, Belichick offered some jokes about his former AFC East rivals (Bills and Jets) during the eventual Buffalo victory. The standout comments came from Belichick as he discussed his association and thoughts about the Jets.

“I’m not a big Jets fan, in case you don’t know that,” Belichick joked. “I like ‘Fireman Ed,’ but that’s it.”

Reacting to the recent news of New York firing head coach Robert Saleh, Belichick stood up for his former counterpart.

“I thought Coach Saleh really did a good job with this team,” said the ex-New England coach.

After Peyton noted that it “seemed quite early to make a coaching change,” Belichick went a little further in his critique of Jets leadership, especially team owner Woody Johnson.

“That’s kind of what it’s been there with the Jets. They’ve barely won over 30 percent in the last 10 years. The owner being the owner, just ready, fire aim.”

Given Belichick’s unique history with the Jets — having technically been the team’s head coach at two different points in history without ever actually coaching a game in that role — his iconic decision to resign in 2000 as “HC of the NYJ” less than 24 hours after he was named as Bill Parcells’ successor was brought up.

“I was tight on space,” Belichick quipped when asked why he didn’t “bother” to write out the full message.

“Look, Peyton, I was head coach of the Jets twice,” he reminded the Manning brothers. “I was the head coach before Parcells came there, and I was head coach after Bill resigned. Undefeated, un-scored on. My career as coach of the Jets, unblemished. Never gave up a point.”

After a tumultuous entrance and exit with the Jets, Belichick famously wound up in New England. He eventually led New York’s AFC East rival to six Super Bowl wins in 24 seasons.

On this day: In 2013, the Red Sox won Game 3 of the ALCS 1-0 against the Tigers. John Lackey continued his redemptive arc in Boston, pitching 6.2 scoreless innings before handing things off to the Red Sox bullpen (which combined to complete the shutout).

In the end, a Mike Napoli home run off of Justin Verlander proved to be the difference in the game.

Daily highlight: While Jets highlights aren’t generally a thing Patriots fans enjoy seeing, Aaron Rodgers’s consistent ability to complete a “Hail Mary” touchdown pass struck again. Of course, the Bills still won the game in the end, 23-20.
