Rich Hill’s thoughts on his 2024 Red Sox season: The Red Sox recently re-signed pitcher Rich Hill on a minor-league deal in an attempt to shore up the team’s faltering staff.
Hill, 44, represents a unique acquisition given his experience (this will be his fourth tenure in Boston). The lefty could help the Red Sox in a variety of potential roles.
He recently discussed his decision to come back, and what he hopes for in an interview with WEEI’s Rob Bradford on his podcast, “Baseball Isn’t Boring.” The veteran pitcher is currently with the team’s Triple-A affiliate, the Worcester Red Sox.
Per Hill, the goal is to make it back to the MLB roster prior to Sept. 1 due to roster rules.
“I mean, realistically, obviously, it would be before Sept. 1 to be able to have an opportunity to play and be on that postseason roster,” Hill told Bradford. “I think I have plenty of experience of pitching in the postseason and understanding what it takes to pitch in that environment. Kind of making that situation as attainable as possible and bringing a level of just understanding and experience in that situation. And that’s something that’s certainly one of the driving forces behind coming back and pitching.”

The Red Sox (67-59) are currently 3.5 games behind the Twins (71-56) for the final American League wild card spot.
Hill, in five seasons in which he pitched for Boston, compiled a 12-8 record with a 3.31 ERA over 185 innings pitched.
Trivia: In total, there are 31 players who featured in MLB games across four separates decades. Of that group, 15 went to the Hall of Fame. Three players from this Hall of Fame group played for the Red Sox for varying lengths of their careers. Can you name those three players?
