Other teams were reportedly interested in Matthew Judon: The Patriots made news Wednesday night with the decision to trade four-time Pro Bowler Matthew Judon to the Falcons for a 2025 third-round pick.

This represents the end of a New England training camp subplot in which Judon sought — but was not given — a new contract that he felt was worthy of his value. And according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Atlanta wasn’t the only potential trade partner.

Per Fowler, the Bears and Texans had varying interest in the 32-year-old Judon.

“While the Bears were heavily involved in [Matthew] Judon trade talks, the Texans also showed some interest,” noted Fowler. He added that there was a “healthy market” for the pass rusher.

With the deal, New England appears to be casting at least one eye toward the future. Having added a third rounder, the Patriots are currently set to have nine picks in 2025 (including multiple third- and seventh-round selections).

Trivia: Matthew Judon posted back-to-back seasons with double-digit sack totals in 2021 and 2022. Each of those totals would rank atop the Patriots’ single-season sack record list were it not for one other man. Who is the only Patriots player to exceed Judon’s single-season totals (a feat he accomplished twice)?

(Answer at the bottom.)

Hint: He’s in the Hall of Fame.

Scores and schedules:

The Red Sox lost 9-7 to the Rangers in the series finale on Wednesday night. Boston will face the Orioles tonight at 6:35 p.m. in Baltimore for the start of a four-game series.
