The Patriots and Jacoby Brissett: The Patriots could reunite with a former Tom Brady backup this offseason, according to the latest report.

Per multiple reports, including Ben Volin of The Boston Globe and Chad Graff of The Athletic, New England has “real” interest in reacquiring quarterback Jacoby Brissett:

“Expect him to be one of the Patriots’ first calls when negotiations can begin at noon,” noted Graff. NFL free agency officially begins on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET, but teams can start talking to agents today (Monday, March 11) at 12 p.m. ET.

Volin explained that newly appointed Patriots offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt is a fan of Brissett, and the team views him as a good candidate to also help a rookie develop.

“Van Pelt loved coaching Brissett, per the source, and the Patriots view Brissett as a hard worker who can be a good role model for the rookie and help establish a positive culture in the locker room,” wrote Volin.

Following the decision to make the reported trade of Mac Jones to the Jaguars, the Patriots are very much in the market for a quarterback. Whether or not New England ultimately opts to pick one in the draft, it appears that new head coach Jerod Mayo wants to have a veteran presence on the depth chart as well.

Brissett, 31, was originally drafted by the Patriots in the third round in 2016. He started two games as a rookie during Brady’s “Deflategate” suspension (and as a result of backup Jimmy Garoppolo being hurt).

He was traded to the Colts in 2017 for wide receiver Phillip Dorsett, and has played for Indianapolis, Cleveland, Miami, and Washington since then. In all, he’s thrown for 10,574 passing yards, 51 touchdowns, and 23 interceptions while completing 61.3 percent of his attempts.

The U.S. wins the Gold Cup: Lindsay Horan’s header proved to be the difference as the U.S. women overcame Brazil 1-0 to win the Gold Cup on Sunday. It’s a good bounce-back result following a disappointing World Cup (and ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics).

On this day: In 1965, Bill Russell led the Celtics past the Pistons 112-100 with a remarkable performance. Though he wasn’t known for individual stats, Russell totaled 49 rebounds (along with 27 points and six assists).
