The latest on Jordan Montgomery and the Red Sox: With spring training now underway, the Red Sox might still be trying to do some last-minute free agent shopping.

Jordan Montgomery, the 31-year-old left-handed starter (and 2023 World Series champion), remains a free agent. He was not re-signed by the Rangers, and is on the open the market. The Red Sox have been linked to him throughout the offseason, partly because he was reportedly living in Boston.

The most recent report on his potential destination came from MLB Network’s Jon Heyman, who said that Boston had recently been in contact with Montgomery.

“The Red Sox were definitely talking to Montgomery about two weeks ago,” Heyman explained in a Bleacher Report “Walk-Off” segment. “That did seem to be a consideration, but there has been no movement on that since then.”

Heyman added that Montgomery is working out on his own to prepare for the 2024 season, and is “waiting patiently.” He listed the Cubs, Angels, and Giants among the teams potentially competing with the Red Sox to sign the free agent.

Montgomery, who has a career 3.68 ERA, went 9-7 with a 3.88 ERA in 2023. If signed, he would add a left-handed presence in Boston’s starting rotation.

Trivia: Jordan Montgomery made his MLB debut with the Yankees in a start against the Rays in 2017. Who was the opposing pitcher that day?

Charlie Coyle pounced on the goaltender’s mistake: The Bruins lost in overtime, but this Charlie Coyle goal — taking advantage of an ill-timed turnover from Flames goaltender Jacob Markstrom and firing it — was impressive nonetheless.

Jayson Tatum, international star: Brazilian soccer legend Ronaldinho recently made a cameo appearance on “Survivor Turkey” while wearing a Jayson Tatum jersey. He scored with a bicycle kick:

On this day: In 1972, the Bruins fell behind 6-1 in the second period of a game against the (now defunct) California Golden Seals. Boston, having also traded for Golden Seals defenseman Carol Vadnais earlier in the day, eventually stormed back into the game.

After pulling back two goals at the end of the second period, Boston added two more at the start of the third. Trailing now by only a goal, Bruins center Phil Esposito pulled Boston level with his 53rd goal of the season. Esposito added another to give the Bruins a 7-6 lead less than three minutes later, and a Derek Sanderson empty-netter sealed the remarkable 8-6 victory.

The Celtics also won, beating the Cavaliers 113-111. John Havlicek led Boston with 33 points and 10 assists.
