Former Red Sox utility man Brock Holt designated for assignment by the Brewers
Holt only had three hits in 30 at-bats with Milwaukee this season.
Brock Holt’s tenure in Milwaukee appears to be over.
The Brewers designated Holt for assignment, the team announced Saturday.
The former Red Sox utility man struggled in his brief time with the Brewers this season. He went 3-for-30 (.100) from the plate with a .222 on-base percentage and struck out nine times in 16 games.
Holt was open about his struggles when talking to reporters last week, saying that being away from his pregnant wife, Lakyn, and his young son, Griffin, was affecting him.
“I’m physically here but mentally at home with them trying to make sure everything is going good with them,” Holt said. “That’s been the hardest thing for me, personally.”
Holt signed a one-year, $2.5 million deal in February that had an option for the 2021 season with Milwaukee. Holt felt like he had no choice but to play this season if he wanted his MLB career to continue.
“I’m not in a position to opt out of a season,” Holt told Milwaukee reporters in early July. “I feel like if I didn’t play this year, my baseball career would be over. If I didn’t play, it would be hard for me to find a job next year.”
With the open spot on the 40-man roster, the Brewers called up utility man Jace Peterson from the team’s alternate training site.

The Brewers will have seven days to place Holt back on the 40-man roster. If they elect not to, Holt will either be placed on waivers, traded, released or they’ll outright him to the minors if no one claims him.
Holt’s struggles at the plate this season are a bit of a surprise after how well he hit the ball in 2019. In his final season with the Red Sox, Holt hit .297 with a .369 on-base percentage. He also had three homers and 31 RBIs.
In seven seasons with the Red Sox, Holt hit .270 and had a .340 on-base percentage to go along with 23 home runs and 203 RBIs. He was also the team’s All-Star representative in 2015 and was a part of the 2018 team that won the World Series. His signature moment during the 2018 playoffs was when he became the first player in postseason history to hit for the cycle in the team’s 16-1 win over the Yankees in Game 4 of the Division Series.
