The bigger they come, the more awkward it looks when they fall down in the ring with Mitt Romney.

Romney, formerly the governor of Massachusetts and a Republican presidential nominee, stepped into with the ring with five-time heavyweight boxing champion Evander Holyfield in a charity bout Saturday in Salt Lake City.

It may be a stretch to refer to what transpired as a “fight,’’ but Romney announced on Twitter that the event raised $1 million, a Utah-based nonprofit dedicated to addressing curable blindness and poor vision in 21 developing countries.

Romney, 68, lasted two rounds with Holyfield, 52, before his corner threw in the towel. To the apparent delight of the crowd, Romney did throw a few punches at Holyfield. The fighter who famously battled — and was bitten by — Mike Tyson, was even knocked down — or chose to fall down — before it was all over.

After Holyfield hit the canvas, Romney decided to get out with his teeth intact.
