The Red Sox have been a pleasure to watch recently, taking a 10-game winning streak into the All-Star break.
With the second half commencing Friday, NESN has taken steps with its standalone NESN 360 app to ensure that the experience of watching the rejuvenated Sox is also an enjoyable one.
NESN is officially relaunching NESN 360 on Friday with significant upgrades, which include new features — including the availability of old Red Sox games — an improved interface that doesn’t require a password login, and greater stability during live broadcasts.
NESN has partnered with ViewLift, a cloud-based streaming platform company, to provide the underlying infrastructure and technology to power NESN 360. ViewLift manages streaming for 16 other professional teams and six regional cable networks.
Ahmed Darwish, chief marketing officer at NESN, said the network took feedback from NESN 360 users into consideration while going through the process of finding a new company to provide infrastructure for the app, which has had a history of glitching.
NESN 360 launched in June 2022 as the first regional sports network to have a direct-to-consumer app for Major League Baseball games. NESN is also home of the Bruins.
“We went through a pretty rigorous process when trying to find a potential partner,” said Darwish, “and we knew that quality and stability was really critical to people. We knew that there was an expectation that our features like DVR and fast-forward and rewind and all kinds of things were on par with if not better than industry standard.”
This relaunch is not just a one-time update, Darwish said. “It’s the beginning of a foundation for ongoing improvement. We will have much more flexibility with updating new content.”
The upgrade should be easy for NESN 360 subscribers. There’s no need to download anything from the app store. When users open the upgraded app, on their smartphone, laptop, or major connected TV platforms, they will need to share their email in order to receive a one-time passcode to log in.
Once the initial log-in with the passcode is applied upon upgrade, users will be taken directly to a live game if one is going on when they click on the app. Previously, a log-in every time was required.
“We know our users want a seamless experience,” said Darwish.
