John Tomase is leaving WEEI to join NBC Sports Boston
NBC Sports Boston fired Red Sox reporter Evan Drellich in February.
John Tomase is leaving WEEI to join NBC Sports Boston, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.
Tomase, who joined WEEI as a columnist and senior writer on its website in December 2014 after nine years at the Boston Herald, will write for NBCSportsBoston.com and appear on the regional cable network’s various studio programs.
NBC Sports Boston had a job open up in February when the network fired Red Sox reporter Evan Drellich.
NBC Sports Boston is the home for regional Celtics broadcasts and also has several Patriots-centric programs and podcasts.
But this season, it has been de-emphasizing original reporting and coverage of the Red Sox.
The line from parting ways with Drellich to hiring Tomase – both of whom have been third voices on WEEI’s “Mut and Callahan’’ morning show — was not a direct one.
Former ESPN anchor Jorge Andres was expected to join NBC Sports Boston after Drellich was let go, but that deal fell apart under vague circumstances.
Multiple sources said Andres oversold a connection to connection to Red Sox manager Alex Cora, with whom he’d worked at ESPN. It’s uncertain whether that is a reason he didn’t ultimately join the network.
