Boston Legacy will play inaugural game against NWSL champion, and schedule includes seven games in Rhode Island

"Yes, we are an expansion team, but in this league it doesn’t matter if you are the champion or it’s your first-ever game — anyone can win.”

Boston Legacy FC will open its inaugural season with a bang, facing reigning National Women’s Soccer League champion Gotham FC in the club’s first game.

Boston will host Gotham at 12:30 p.m. March 14 at Gillette Stadium. The start to the Legacy’s first NWSL season will be televised on ABC.

Seventeen of the club’s 30 games, including the home opener, will be nationally televised, and the schedule features an even split of home and road games.

“I’m excited to get on the pitch and compete,” Legacy coach Filipa Patão said in a release. “We want our fans to love watching us play, so we will always fight hard for our fans and for the crest on our shirt.

“We’re not here to avoid losing; we are here to try to win. Yes, we are an expansion team, but in this league it doesn’t matter if you are the champion or it’s your first-ever game — anyone can win.”

Boston will host the Denver Summit, the other 2026 expansion club, on May 3 (3 p.m., CBS Sports Network).

The team’s first six home games will be played at Gillette Stadium. Seven of the final nine will be at Centreville Bank Stadium in Pawtucket, R.I., because of scheduling conflicts in Foxborough brought on by the men’s World Cup.

The first Pawtucket game will be against the Seattle Reign on May 22 (8 p.m., Amazon).

The NWSL schedule includes a break from June 1-28 to accommodate the men’s World Cup schedule, which includes seven matches at Gillette Stadium — five group stage games, a Round of 32 game, and a quarterfinal — between June 13 and July 9.

The Legacy’s home schedule concludes on Oct. 16 vs. Racing Louisville, and the NWSL playoffs will begin on Nov. 6.

The Legacy will travel to Florida this month with 23 players under contract to begin practices ahead of the season.
