Evan Orr scored 31 seconds into overtime to give the Stonehill men’s hockey team a 3-2 win over No. 9 UMass Lowell at Tsongas Center on Saturday night.
It was the first win for the Skyhawks (8-19-0) over a ranked opponent since joining Division 1.
Henri Schreifels grabbed a loose puck along the right wall in the UMass Lowell zone, made a move to his right to get past a River Hawks defender, and headed toward the net. He slipped a nice backhand pass above the crease to an open Orr for the winner.
Of Orr’s six goals this season, three have been game-winners, including two in overtime.
“It took us basically 59 minutes and 30 seconds to tie it, but we stuck with it and had a really good push in the third,” Stonehill coach David Berard said. “Then we got a bounce in overtime, made a play and got a huge win — milestone win for the program — super excited for that.”
Orr helped force the extra session in the final minute of regulation while Stonehill had an extra attacker. His shot from the left circle was stopped by Henry Welsch, but Teddy Lagerback dove to the ice to poke the rebound through Welsch’s pads with 37.9 seconds left with his fourth of the season.
Dominick Campione opened the scoring for Stonehill late in the first period, only to have UMass Lowell (12-7-2) go ahead in the middle 20 minutes on goals from Jak Vaarwerk and Owen Cole on the power play.
Connor Androlewicz made 23 saves for his eighth win of the season.
