Tiger Woods will play in Dell Technologies Championship at TPC Boston
It will be Woods’s first start in Boston in five years and his ninth overall.
Tiger Woods is coming to Boston later this summer.
Woods has committed to compete in the 2018 Dell Technologies Championship at TPC Boston, according to a PGA Tour source. The tournament is scheduled for Aug. 30 to Sept. 3. The PGA Tour is expected to announce the news later Tuesday.
It will be Woods’s first start in Boston in five years and his ninth overall.
The 14-time major winner has four top-10 finishes in 12 starts this season and is ranked 47th in the FedEx Cup standings after finishing tied for sixth at the British Open earlier in July.
Woods has not won on the PGA Tour since 2013. Injury problems and legal issues, including an arrest after being discovered asleep behind the wheel of his vehicle in the spring of 2017, saw Woods plummet from the top of the golf world, but he has emerged as a contender in several events this season.
“I was struggling there for a while, and now I’m on the other end of the spectrum,’’ Woods told the New York Times in June. “I don’t have the pain, which is incredible, and I’m able to do this again, something I love and something that I’ve been doing for a very long time. Golf’s been a part of my life ever since I can remember, and I didn’t know if I could ever be a part of the game again.’’
Justin Thomas, who won here a year ago, will also be competing over Labor Day weekend. It will be the fourth start in Boston for Thomas, who was the 2017 FedEx Cup winner.
“I’m really excited to get back,’’ Thomas said. “It’s a place that I liked when I first went there even though I didn’t play well the first few years. … It’s a fun week. I love the city of Boston, great fans, good sports fans, and should be a good week.’’
Dustin Johnson, who leads the playoffs standings and is ranked No. 1 in the world, previously committed to playing the Dell, as has Masters champion Patrick Reed.
Woods will also participate in the Northern Trust, the first event in the 2018 FedEx Cup Playoff, which will be Aug. 21-26 at Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, N.J.
Here is a look at how Woods has performed in his previous eight appearances in Boston:
2003: 70-69-67-67, (-11), T7. Although he didn’t win a major that year, Tiger took home five tournament wins and six additional top five finishes.
2004: 65-68-69-69, (-13), T2. With only one win in 2004, Woods’s runner-up finish at the Deutsche Bank Championship was tied with his finish at the WGC-NEC Invitational for his second-best finish of the year.
2005: 65-73-72-71, (-3), T40. In a 2005 that saw Woods win two majors (The Masters and The British Open), he turned in his second-worst performance at TPC Boston of his career.
2006: 66-72-67-63, (-16), winner. One of eight tournament wins (two majors: The British Open and PGA Championship), Woods shot an 8-under-63 on Sunday to win at TPC Boston.
2007: 72-64-67-67, (-14), T2. Woods logged his second career runner-up finish at TPC Boston, the only blip during an August to December run that saw him win every tournament he played except Boston.
2009: 70-67-72-63, (-12), T11. In a year that saw Woods win six tournaments but no majors, Tiger tied his personal record at TPC Boston with an 8-under-par 63 on Sunday.
2010: 72-65-69-68, (-10), T11. With no wins in 2010, Woods finished T11 for the second year in a row.
2012: 64-68-68-66, (-18), 3rd. Winning three tournaments in 2012, Woods shot below par in all four rounds at TPC Boston but finished alone in third place.
2013: 68-67-72-73, (-4), T65. Tied for his worst finish in a year in which he won five tournaments, Woods failed to break par on Saturday or Sunday, finishing T65.
