That Patrick Reed’s life would change once he won the Masters Sunday was obvious. But with that success comes scrutiny. No sooner had Reed tried on the green jacket, reports were coming out about how he is estranged from his family.

The story was not referenced during the broadcast on CBS, but for those going online to learn more about the newest Masters champ, the information was startling.

Reed’s parents and sister were not welcome at the tournament and instead hosted a party just a few miles away. The estrangement dates back to 2012, when Reed had a falling out with his family when he decided to get married to Justine Karian in December of that year. Reed was just 22 at the time, and his parents, Bill and Jeannette Reed, expressed their concerns that Patrick was moving too fast.

Patrick cut off contact with his family, and neither his parents nor his sister Hannah were invited to the wedding. More than five years later, the Reeds have not had contact with Patrick, who has not responded to their e-mails and other attempts to communicate. Bill, Jeannette, and Hannah attended the 2014 US Open, but were escorted off the course and had their tournament passes revoked by a USGA official who, according to Jeannette, said he was acting on a request from Justine.

The bad blood became public when Justine wrote of her in-laws that, “They are sick people and need help,’’ in a post on Facebook. Hannah responded with a post of her own, writing, “Patrick is not the same person he used to be. This is not a brother anymore, but a selfish, horrible stranger and it’s heartbreaking … It is devastating seeing my parents hurt and suffer from what is being posted about them.’’
