Boston Mayor Michelle Wu officially announced Tuesday that the FIFA World Cup Fan Festival will be hosted at City Hall Plaza in the heart of downtown Boston.

The announcement was made during a press conference with Gov. Maura Healey.

The central location of City Hall Plaza, Wu said, offers a prime opportunity to showcase Boston’s vibrant culture and diverse community. She also highlighted how the event will provide significant exposure for local businesses.

Healey called the plaza a “historic gathering space” that will come alive with live entertainment, local food, and interactive experiences.

State Rep. Aaron Michlewitz also spoke at the press conference, emphasizing the significance of the festival. He noted that Boston “needs centralization” — a gathering point for fans who may not be able to attend the World Cup matches in Foxborough.

The FIFA World Cup will feature seven matches at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, and it’s expected to generate $100 million in tax revenue and more than 9,000 jobs, said Martha Sheridan, CEO and president of Meet Boston.

Healey further shared that the state anticipates attracting over 2 million international visitors during the tournament, contributing to a broader economic impact of more than $1 billion.

A key focus for state leaders, Healey said, is ensuring smooth and safe operations during the World Cup. The state has been working closely with Boston 26, the nonprofit organizing committee for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, to coordinate efforts and facilitate seamless fan experiences.

“I love the World Cup for what it represents,” Healey said. “[It’s] people from around the world not only coming to celebrate but competing, playing in what is a universally loved and appreciated sport, and it’s certainly one appreciated here in Massachusetts.”
