Red Sox Opening Day postponed due to weather, rescheduled for Friday
Friday afternoon, Fenway Park should once again be the home of the Boston Red Sox as the team hosts the Baltimore Orioles for Opening Day after a brief postponement due to rain.
A lucky few thousand fans will even become the first to witness a Boston home baseball game since the fall of 2019 — a sign of how far the state has come since the start of the coronavirus pandemic last year.
Fenway’s work as a mass vaccination site for the last few months played a big role in achieving that milestone, with workers administering more than 56,000 COVID-19 vaccines to eligible recipients there since opening in January.
Now, CIC Health, the Cambridge-based company that ran the site, is sharing its appreciation for the ballpark and its staff in a tribute video published Thursday.
The video can be viewed here or on the CIC website:
Fenway was originally scheduled to remain a mass vaccination site during the season but the site was moved to Hynes Convention Center to avoid the logistical challenges of holding vaccinations and baseball games at the park simultaneously, according to Governor Charlie Baker.
Frannie Chan was the last person vaccinated at the site, receiving her immunization on Sunday and exiting the ballpark to cheers from staff. Now, Fenway itself gets one last vaccine-related round of applause before baseball officially returns Friday.
