The Baseball Beanpot starts Tuesday, April 1, with the tournament consisting of teams Boston College, Northeastern, UMass and Harvard. After preliminary games this week, the consolation and championship games will take place April 29 at Fenway Park. These games will be streamed on NESN.
Here is what you need to know.
The first game of the tournament is at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Northeastern’s Friedman Diamond, where the Huskies will take on the Boston College Eagles.
The two universities matched up on March 19, where the Eagles defended their home field, winning 6-0. Since the game, BC has advanced their record to 13-12, and Northeastern’s to 18-8.
The second game on Tuesday is at 3 p.m. at UMass, where the Minutemen and the Crimson face off the first time this season.
The Minutemen currently hold a 9-12-1 record, while Harvard holds a 2-18 record. The last time the two played was last season in the Beanpot consolation game, where Harvard won 10-3.
The first baseball Beanpot was played in 1990, but there were many changes to the tournament that has made it what it is today.
Boston University used to play in the tournament, going 2-9, before the varsity team was disbanded after the 1996 season.
In 2007, Holy Cross replaced Harvard in the consolation game due to a scheduling conflict. The Crusaders beat the Minutemen 8-3 in seven innings.
Boston College has collected the most Beanpot titles at 15. Their last win was in 2023. Their overall record for the tournament stands at 42-18-1.
UMass and Northeastern both hold seven titles.
The Minutemen have not won a title since 2019, and their last appearance in the championship was in 2022. Overall in the tournament, UMass holds a 23-27 record.
Northeastern was last year’s Beanpot champion, reclaiming the title for the first time since 2013. The Huskies did make an appearance in the finals in 2018, losing to Harvard 8-6. Northeastern’s overall record in the tournament stands at 32-29.
Harvard rounds out the field with 5 overall Beanpot trophies.
The last time the Crimson lifted the trophy was in 2018, but they last appeared in the championship game in 2023, losing to Boston College. In 1998, Harvard was co-champion with UMass because the game was cancelled due to rain. This is the first and only co-championship in the tournament.
