Boston College quarterback Phil Jurkovec is immediately eligible

Much was made in the months prior about whether or not the NCAA would allow Jurkovec to play right away.

Boston College sophomore quarterback Phil Jurkovec will be immediately eligible this fall, the Eagles announced Tuesday.

The 6-foot-5, 226-pound Jurkovec, who transferred to BC in January from Notre Dame, will have three seasons of eligibility with the Eagles.

“Thank you to everyone in the BC community @CoachJeffHafley @FrankCignetti and the @NCAA for granting me the opportunity to play this year. Get in! Go Eagles!” Jurkovec wrote on Twitter.

Much was made in the months prior about whether or not the NCAA would allow Jurkovec to play right away. The unofficial “#FreeJurk” campaign made its way around the internet and generated a lot of buzz.

Jurkovec will compete for the starting job with redshirt junior Dennis Grosel, who filled in admirably as an injured Anthony Brown’s replacement last fall, among others. Redshirt sophomore Matt Valecce, freshman Matthew Rueve, redshirt freshman Daelen Menard, redshirt freshman Sam Johnson III, and freshman Andrew Landry are all listed on the roster as quarterbacks.

Back in high school, at Pine-Richland (PA), Jurkovec was the 24/7’s No. 5 dual threat quarterback nationally and ESPN’s No. 3 player from Pennsylvania. In six games for the Fighting Irish in 2019, he was 12-of-16 for 222 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 130 yards and averaged 5.9 yards per carry as Notre Dame’s backup.

“I don’t think I got too much of an opportunity to showcase what I can do (at Notre Dame),” Jurkovec said back in February.

The Eagles are slated to host Notre Dame this season at a date and time yet to be determined.

Jurkovec said in February that everyone at BC has been welcoming, and he senses that people at the school are real and honest.

“The guys are hungry, and they want more,” Jurkovec said at the time, “so that’s very exciting.”

He’s expected to speak to the media via Zoom on Monday, Aug. 10.
