UMass hockey’s Cale Makar signs entry-level contract with Colorado Avalanche
Makar will immediately join the Avalanche in the midst of their playoff series.
UMass men’s hockey defenseman and Hobey Baker Award winner Cale Makar signed a three-year entry-level contract Sunday with the Colorado Avalanche.
He will immediately join the Avalanche, in the midst of their Western Conference first-round playoff series with the Calgary Flames. Game 3 of the series is Monday night in Colorado.

Makar, 20, was born in Calgary and led UMass to its first Division 1 national championship appearance in program history, where the Minutemen lost to Minnesota-Duluth 3-0 on Saturday. Makar had 16-33–49 totals in his sophomore season at UMass and 21-49–70 totals in two seasons with the program.
He was selected by the Avalanche with the fourth overall pick in the 2017 NHL Draft, the highest selection of a UMass player.
