Northeastern outlasts Boston College, captures Hockey East title
The Huskies already had earned a berth in next weekend’s NCAA tournament.
Northeastern jumped off to an early three-goal lead and held on to beat Boston College, 3-2, for the Hockey East tournament title at TD Garden, winning its second crown in four years.
The third-seeded Huskies already had earned a berth in next weekend’s NCAA tournament, where it will be a No. 2 seed. But the Eagles, who were ranked well outside the qualifying zone, needed to win here to collect the conference’s automatic berth.

Northeastern tried for an early knockout, with Brandon Hawkins scoring two goals and setting up a third in the first dozen minutes. But BC answered with power play goals by Oliver Wahlstrom and David Cotton in the first two minutes of the middle period.
The Eagles, though, couldn’t crack the Huskies 5-on-5 and their frantic efforts with their cage empty went for naught.
