Boston College junior Sam Apuzzo was named recipient of the Tewaaraton Award, given to the nation’s top male and female college lacrosse player, at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C., on Thursday night.

Apuzzo is the first Eagle to win the award in the history of the women’s lacrosse program. Boston College has had 10 Tewaaraton Award nominees. This is Apuzzo’s second consecutive season as a Top 5 finalist.

Apuzzo led the Eagles to an undefeated regular season (17-0), seventh appearance in the NCAA Tournament and second consecutive NCAA Championship game appearance. The Eagles finished the season 22-2 and set a school record for wins in a season.

A native of Babylon, N.Y., Apuzzo led the team in goals (88), assists (41), points (129), draw controls (163), caused turnovers (31) and game-winning goals (9). She was third in the nation in scoring and points scored, while leading the ACC in both categories.

Apuzzo set a new program record for most goals in a single season (88), a record she set in 2017. She also set a new program record for points in a single season and tied the program record for most assists with 41. Apuzzo shattered the old record for most draw controls in a single season with 163.

The Tewaaraton Award organization also honored former BC lacrosse player Welles Crowther, who became known as the “Man in the Red Bandana’’ after leading a number of 9/11 survivors to safety. Crowther, who lost his life in the rescue, was honored as the recipient of the Spirit of the Tewaaraton.
