BU hockey team knocks off top-seeded Cornell
WORCESTER — David Farrance, a freshman defenseman who’d scored only twice all season, produced the third-period winner Saturday afternoon as Boston University’s fourth-seeded hockey team held off top-seeded Cornell, 3-1, at the DCU Center to advance to Sunday’s finale and a date with the Northeastern-Michigan victor with a trip to next month’s Frozen Four in St. Paul on the line.
Cornell (25-6-2), the ECAC regular-season champion, struck first after a scoreless opening period with Trevor Yates beating goalie Jake Oettinger with a wrister from the right circle at 7:27 of the middle session. But BU (22-13-4), the Hockey East tournament titlist, quickly equalized on Shane Bowers’s tally in front just 36 seconds later. Then the Terriers grabbed the lead at 4:39 of the third period when Farrance scored from the left circle.

From there BU relied on tight checking and flawless work by Oettinger to hold the Big Red at bay, particularly after goalie Matt Galajda was pulled with 1:22 to play. Logan Cockerill potted an empty-net goal with 17 seconds left to provide the clincher for BU, which ran its unbeaten streak to eight.
