Having put Connecticut men’s college basketball on the map, Jim Calhoun is helping another local program get its start.

The longtime University of Connecticut coach – who won three national championships with the men’s team during his 26 seasons – is going to help Division III school St. Joseph form a team. While Calhoun is technically still under contract as a special assistant at UConn (and therefore can’t be named coach elsewhere), he will act in an advisory role.

The St. Joseph team will begin play in 2018-2019, with Calhoun and former UConn assistant Glenn Miller helping to recruit for the initial roster.

“I love the game, I love the kids, and the gym is a gym,” Calhoun said to ESPN’s Jeff Goodman.

At 75, Calhoun’s eventual involvement in the team remains unclear at this point, but as the school transitions to a co-ed institution, the former UConn great will help inaugurate the men’s basketball team with, as he put it, “a buzz.”
