The University of Massachusetts men’s basketball team scarcely had time to digest its season-ending loss to St. Bonaventure in the second round of the Atlantic 10 Championship Thursday when the Minutemen dismissed their coach.

Derek Kellogg, 43, of Springfield, who played point guard for John Calipari from 1991-95 during UMass’s rise to national prominence, was fired after nine seasons as the coach at his alma mater.
