The Red Sox appear to be finally spending money in free agency.
According to multiple reports (initially via MLB Network’s Jon Heyman and USA Today’s Bob Nightengale), the Red Sox are signing left-handed starting pitcher Ranger Suarez to a five-year contract worth $130 million.
Suarez, 30, went 12-8 with a 3.20 ERA for the Phillies in 2025. He posted nearly identical stats in 2024, a year in which he made his first MLB All-Star team.
The reported move comes on the heels of Boston losing out in free agency in the bid to re-sign infielder Alex Bregman. Bregman departed for the Cubs on a five-year deal worth $175 million.
Instead of immediately pursuing a Bregman alternative, the Red Sox front office seems to have moved to further solidify the starting rotation. With Garrett Crochet, Brayan Bello, and Sonny Gray (added in an earlier offseason trade) already locked in for the team’s 2026 rotation, the addition of Suarez will make it an even greater position of strength.
As for future moves, the Red Sox are still expected to pursue another player to offset Bregman’s departure.
“Boston now will turn to adding another bat to its lineup,” noted ESPN baseball insider Jeff Passan, “but that rotation is excellent.”
