Red Sox reportedly ‘showing interest’ in free agent Bo Bichette

Bo Bichette could be a potential replacement if the Red Sox can't re-sign Alex Bregman.

One of the top dominos that has yet to fall so far this offseason for the Red Sox is whether or not Boston will be able to re-sign slugging infielder Alex Bregman.

But could Boston already have a potential contingency plan in place if Bregman signs elsewhere or prices himself out of the Red Sox’ range in a bidding war?

According to WEEI’s Rob Bradford, the Red Sox are “showing interest’ in Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette, who is expected to be one of the top free agents out on the open market this winter.

“Bichette is projected by most to get a contract between 7-8 years worth upwards of $200 million,” Bradford noted. “His age (he will be 28 on March 5) helps counter any hesitancy brought upon by having a qualifying offer attached.”

Bichette would fit the bill for Boston when it comes to his profile as a impact bat from the right side of the plate — with the 27-year-old slugger batting .311 with 18 home runs and 94 RBI in 139 games for Toronto in 2025.

Even though Bichette has primarily played shortstop with Toronto, his lackluster defensive metrics could prompt him to switch to either second or third base moving forward — which could make him a natural fit for Boston at either spot.

If Bregman signs elsewhere, Bichette and Marcelo Mayer could take over the vacant spots at second and third base, respectively.

As Bradford noted, Bichette has had plenty of success at Fenway Park over the years — batting .327 and posting a .907 OPS in 35 games in Boston’s ballpark.

Bradford added that Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow also spent the final year of his pro career serving as a veteran mentor for blue-chip Toronto prospects like Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. with the Jays’ Double-A affiliate in New Hampshire during the 2018 season.

Earlier this week, former MLB GM Jim Bowden tabbed Bichette as a logical fit for the Red Sox, especially if they can’t retain Bregman, who will turn 32 at the end of March 2026.

“If I were them, and this is not coming from them. This is just me. I would want Bo Bichette to play third base,” Bowden said on “Foul Territory” on Monday. “That’s my first goal. I love the bat. I love the hitter. I like the kid. I like him at third base or second base. You can put him at second and Marcelo Meyer at third base with [Trevor] Story at shortstop.”
