The Red Sox are reportedly making a change at first base on the verge of a pivotal series against the Yankees.
According to an initial report from Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic (as well as multiple other sources), the Red Sox have designated infielder Abraham Toro for assignment. David Hamilton has been recalled to fill the roster spot, per McCaffrey.

Toro, 28, has accrued a .244/.294/.378 slash line, notching seven home runs in 76 games. He started well enough, with a .271 average and a .739 OPS in the first half of the season. But in the last few weeks, Toro has struggled. Since the All-Star break, he’s batting just .182.
The recent addition of first baseman Nathaniel Lowe from free agency after being waived by the Nationals — and his subsequent home run in his first game with Boston on Tuesday — likely cleared the path for Toro’s exit.
Though he had started more games at first base for the Red Sox than anyone else in 2025 (67), Toro was unable to provide a consistent enough threat at the plate to make up for the season-ending injury to regular first baseman Triston Casas.
Hamilton returns to the big league club after spending 10 days with Triple-A Worcester. The 27-year-old has hit .174 in 69 games with the Red Sox in 2025.
