Another exciting Red Sox prospect has been given his first call-up to the Major League level.
Jhostynxon Garcia, who was given the enjoyable nickname “The Password” in 2021 due to the unusual spelling of his name, received the call-up on Thursday afternoon prior to Boston’s pivotal four-game series against the Yankees in New York. The news was reported and confirmed by Tommy Cassell of the Worcester Telegram & Gazette, and MassLive’s Katie Morrison-O’Day.
“[I] had the urge to cry once I heard the news,” he said via WooSox coach Iggy Suarez’s translation. “For sure excited.”

Garcia is certainly more than an creative nickname as he was hitting .303 at Triple A Worcester with 17 home runs and a .932 OPS prior to getting the call. After the earlier call-ups in 2025 of Boston’s former trio of top prospects (Kristian Campbell, Marcelo Mayer, and Roman Anthony), Garcia moved up to third on MLB.com’s list of the top Red Sox players in the team’s minor league system.
Garcia joining the Red Sox will be offset by the report that Wilyer Abreu is heading to the Injured List, according to MassLive’s Chris Cotillo.
It’s the second promotion for Garcia in 2025, who began the year at the team’s Double A affiliate.
Though Garcia is nominally an outfielder, he recently also started to get time playing first base for Worcester as the Red Sox organization eye a potentially creative solution to the problem of replacing Triston Casas.
Casas, the starting Red Sox first baseman, is out for the season after having knee surgery in May. The position has been a difficult hole to fill in the lineup. Following the news that Boston had designated Abraham Toro for assignment earlier on Thursday (who had played 68 games at first base for the Red Sox in 2025), another possible spot opened up. For the time being, recently-signed Nathaniel Lowe is also a likely first base candidate.
In the short term, Garcia’s call-up coincides with a crucial series for the Red Sox in the Bronx against the rival Yankees. Both teams prepare for a four-game showdown into the weekend, separated by a slim margin in the American League wild card standings (New York is currently 1.5 games up).
