Red Sox rookie Marcelo Mayer will be out indefinitely as he faces a familiar injury.

Boston placed the 22-year-old infielder on the 10-day injured list with a right wrist sprain ahead of Friday’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Fenway Park. Infielder David Hamilton was recalled from Triple-A Worcester as a corresponding move.

Mayer appeared to sustain the injury at some point during Wednesday’s game versus the Philadelphia Phillies. He was removed from the contest in the fifth inning due to right wrist discomfort.

Speaking with reporters Friday, Mayer explained he suffered no broken bones and that he isn’t yet sure of the severity of his sprain. He will meet with the team’s training staff Friday to learn more.

“I just felt a little tight grab in my wrist when I took a swing in my second at-bat,” Mayer said (via MassLive’s Chris Cotillo). “I knew I really couldn’t do anything after that so I just called it (a game).”

Reporters noted Mayer sounded “dejected” while discussing his injury. However, he offered a hopeful quote despite the circumstances.

“It feels in some pain but hopefully it’s not too serious and I can get back on the field soon,” Mayer said.

Mayer also said the timing of his ailment is “brutal” and “super annoying” given his injury history since being drafted by the Red Sox in 2021, according to The Boston Globe’s Tim Healey.

In fact, this isn’t the first time he’s injured his right wrist. Mayer dealt with right wrist soreness in 2022, which was later diagnosed as a sprain, and he was sidelined for several games on and off early in the season.

Surgery has not been ruled out, but according to Cotillo, Boston is weighing a second opinion.

Manager Alex Cora fielded questions from reporters about Mayer’s situation pregame Friday.

“We’re gathering information,” he said (via Healey). “We’ll get more over the weekend, during the week. Whenever we get to the point to see what’s going to happen, we’ll let you know.”

Mayer has been seen wearing different types of braces and splints since sustaining the sprain on Wednesday. He was photographed wearing a splint by KDR MedSpa in Boston on Thursday.

With Mayer sidelined, Cora said to expect to see Ceddanne Rafaela receive more playing time at second base and an outfield consisting of Roman Anthony, Jarren Duran, and Wilyer Abreu from left to right. Cora also said Masataka Yoshida will be the Red Sox’ designated hitter.

The injury is a tough break for Mayer, who’d played in 44 games since making his MLB debut two months ago. He batted .228 with a .674 OPS, including eight doubles and four home runs.
