Ex-top Red Sox prospect makes MLB debut, records multiple milestones with White Sox
Kyle Teel was a key piece of the Garrett Crochet trade this past winter.
On the same night Marcelo Mayer hit his first MLB home run, his former teammate Kyle Teel made his MLB debut and recorded his first career hit.
Teel, formerly a top Red Sox prospect, was promoted to the White Sox on Thursday and made his first appearance on Friday, batting sixth. He smacked an opposite field line drive single in the fourth inning at Chicago’s home ballpark.
“This is a dream come true,” Teel said before the game, via the Chicago Tribune‘s Lamond Pope. “I’m trying to soak it all in. It’s something I worked my whole life for. It’s really special.”
Additionally, the 23-year-old Teel caught a runner stealing for the first time in the majors. He threw out the Royals’ Drew Waters at second base in the top of the fourth, not long before logging his first base hit.
The infielder who caught Teel’s throw and tagged Waters out at second? Chase Meidroth, who was also part of the Crochet deal. The pair played together in the Red Sox’ minor league system.
Meidroth made his MLB debut for the White Sox in April.
Teel also walked twice in Chicago’s 7-2 victory.
“I would just say that working hard and being consistent with my process every single day is what I did and I don’t expect that to stop,” Teel said of reaching the majors. “Just keep the head down and keep working hard. I think that’s a big part of my game, just being a hard-nosed ball player. That’s what I’m going to do.”
Teel was a key piece of the Garrett Crochet trade between Boston and Chicago this past winter. He was slated to be Boston’s catcher of the future; he appears to be just that for Chicago already.
