Red Sox’ Alex Bregman suffered ‘significant’ quad injury similar to 2021 when he missed 58 games
Bregman was one of Boston's best players on both sides of the ball before the injury.
The Red Sox got bad news on Saturday regarding Alex Bregman’s injury.
Though Bregman and the Red Sox were hoping he dodged anything major after Bregman was pulled from Friday’s game with what was described at the time as “quad tightness.” However, the third baseman started feeling worse last night, and an MRI revealed he suffered a severe quad strain.
Bregman called the injury “similar to 2021,” the season where he missed over two months and 58 games. While Boston manager Alex Cora didn’t give a timeline regarding Bregman, it’s clear he’ll be out far longer than just one or two weeks.
“He’s going to be out for a while,” Cora said. “Hopefully, trust in our medical staff it’s sooner rather than later but he’s going to be out for a while.”
Bregman was both surprised and disappointed in the news, especially given the season he’s put together thus far.
“Yeah, it’s horrible,” Bregman told reporters Saturday. “There’s nothing else to do but try to get better every single day, focus on the rehab and dominate that. Try to stack as many good days as possible.”
Aside from providing his steady, gold glove-winning hand at third base, Bregman has also been one of Boston’s best offensive players this season. His batting average of .299 and 35 RBIs are second on the Red Sox, while his home runs (11) and hits (59) are both third on the team.
Bregman was one of Boston’s splash signings in free agency. The Red Sox needed a right handed hitter with power and a good defender, and he was among the best available options. Now, they’ll be out a steady right handed bat for some time.
While Bregman’s lengthy absence will be difficult to fill, Boston called up Marcelo Mayer to help fill the void. Mayer made his MLB debut Saturday night at third base.
