Watch: Red Sox drop 13 runs on Orioles in eighth inning
Baltimore’s Emmanuel Rivera, a third baseman, owns a 72.00 ERA after his outing on the mound Friday afternoon.
It’s hard to believe that the Red Sox trailed the Orioles 2-1 after five innings of play Friday, given that Boston ultimately beat Baltimore 19-5.
Rafael Devers was a major reason for the Red Sox’ rout of their American League East foe. He ended Game 1 of the doubleheader with the Orioles with a career-high eight RBI.
It all started in the sixth inning. Coming off Alex Bregman’s sudden departure from the game due to right quad tightness and another brief outing by starting pitcher Brayan Bello, spirits were not high for Boston.
Enter Baltimore relief pitcher Seranthony Dominguez, who was tabbed with the loss.
A Ceddanne Rafaela single tied the game, scoring Nick Sogard, who reached on a double two batters prior.
Fellow reliever Gregory Soto quickly replaced Dominguez, who promptly allowed the Red Sox to take the lead and never look back.
Jarren Duran singled to drive home Kristian Campbell to give Boston a 3-2 advantage.
Then, Rafael Devers made his presence known. The designated hitter launched a 408-foot three-run home run into the Red Sox’ bullpen, giving the club a much-needed four-run lead.
To that point, Boston’s scoring had only just begun.
The Orioles tacked on one run in the top of the eighth, a RBI single by Ramon Urias off of Justin Wilson, to make the score 6-3. Then, the Red Sox’ offense decided that three runs wasn’t enough insurance.
Boston ultimately dropped 13 runs on Baltimore.
Here’s how it went down.
A RBI double by Duran made it 7-3 to score Rafaela, who walked before him.
Devers drove Duran home on a single, upping the score to 8-3.
Rob Refsnyder hit a three-run homer into the Green Monster seats to make it 11-3. This play marked the Orioles’ decision to wave the white flag, as interim manager Tony Mansolino opted to put third baseman Emmanuel Rivera on the mound to replace Soto.
The Red Sox took advantage of the position player pitching by scoring another eight runs the rest of the inning.
Rivera walked the bases loaded, allowed a Devers grand slam, a Refsnyder RBI single, and a Carlos Narvaez two-run double to bring the score to 19-3 entering the ninth inning.
Rivera ended the day sporting a 72.00 ERA due to allowing eight hits, eight runs, and two walks.
Baltimore scored twice more in the ninth inning off of Boston infielder Abraham Toro, but the Red Sox won by 14 runs upon the final out.
The victory brought Boston’s win-loss record to 26-26. The Red Sox have been exactly .500 on the season 12 separate times in 2025.
Boston will aim for its 27th win in Game 2 of the doubleheader. Originally slated for Friday at 7:10 p.m. Eastern Time, it will now be played on Saturday at 1:05 p.m. Eastern Time due to rain. Hunter Dobbins will make the start.
