The Red Sox are giving themselves more options when it comes to replacing Triston Casas at first base.
Boston announced on Thursday that it has acquired first baseman/outfielder Ryan Noda from the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for cash considerations.
Boston assigned Noda to Triple-A Worcester, and placed him on the team’s 40-man roster. In order to accommodate Noda on the roster, the Red Sox also transferred outfielder Masataka Yoshida to the 60-Day Injured List.
Noda, 29, was designated for assignment by the Angels earlier this week after a rough showing so far with Triple-A Salt Lake (.148 batting average, four home runs, eight RBI, and 53 strikeouts in 38 games).
Noda has some experience in the big leagues. He played in 164 career games with the Athletics from 2023-24. He made 130 starts at first base and one in right field with the A’s, with his best season coming during a 2023 campaign where he batted .229 with 16 home runs and 54 RBI over 128 games.
The Angels announced they have traded recently DFAd 1B/OF Ryan Noda to the Red Sox.

On base machine for most of his minor career, and had a .364 OBP with the A’s in 2023, but hasn’t been able to provide much impact with the bat.

Noda adds some depth to Boston’s infield moving forward, so long as he can regain his form at the plate down with Triple-A Worcester.
For now, Boston’s first basemen at the big-league level includes Nick Sogard and Abraham Toro, while Romy Gonzalez is on the IL due to a left quad contusion.
The Red Sox have already started the process of giving rookie second baseman Kristian Campbell reps at first base — although it’s unclear when Boston will give him a start there in a game.
Boston has been hindered with a vacancy at first base for weeks now after Casas suffered a season-ending knee injury on May 2.
