It’s safe to say that Tanner Houck, possessing an 8.04 ERA and having yielded 39 earned runs in 43.2 innings pitched, is not off to a great start in 2025.
The 2024 Red Sox All-Star dropped to 0-3 after yielding 11 runs in just 2.1 innings amid a 14-2 loss to the Tigers on Monday. Houck, 28, has been in a funk since the Midsummer Classic last year. Following the latest debacle, he was candid with his postgame thoughts.
“Probably the most lost I’ve ever been,” Houck explained, per Boston Globe Red Sox reporter Peter Abraham. “Just not getting the job done, which weighs on me heavily.”
It comes after a particularly miserable defeat against Detroit, which was punctuated by a nine-run third innings that included the always ignominious Little League home run (via Riley Greene after a Wilyer Abreu error in right field).

It’s the second time this season that Houck has allowed 11 earned runs, the other time happening on April 14 in what was deemed one of the “worst starts in Red Sox history.” Boston lost that game 16-1 to the Rays.
This time a year ago, Houck — who finished 2024 9-10 with a 3.12 ERA — was 3-5 with a 2.17 ERA.
Houck’s future in the Red Sox rotation is far from assured. Boston manager Alex Cora acknowledged after the game that Houck’s status as a starter will have to be considered.
“We’ll have to take a look at it and see what we do,” said Cora, adding that “there were a lot of pitches in the middle of the zone.”
