Kristian Campbell is proving his swift ascension through the Red Sox farm system was no fluke.

Exactly one year ago, Campbell was playing baseball in South Carolina with the Greenville Drive. He moved from High-A to Double-A Portland in short order and was elevated to Triple-A Worcester by the end of 2024.

Even with limited experience, Campbell competed for a major league spot, and earned the Red Sox’ second base job. On Saturday night, in the third MLB game of his career, Campbell launched his first career home run. A no-doubter.

Watch the long ball here:

The home run was part of a pretty newsworthy night for Campbell. Shortly after Saturday’s Red Sox loss to the Rangers went final, MassLive’s Chris Cotillo reported that Campbell was in deep talks with the team on an extension.

Campbell confirmed that contract discussions between his camp and the Red Sox were ongoing.

“They’re talking back and forth,” Campbell told reporters, via Cotillo. “I know that for a fact. I’m not sure how close or not close it is but we’ve had some communications on that for sure.

“I leave that to my agents and let them talk back and forth and work out what is gonna be done. We’ll listen, for sure.”

Campbell went 2 for 3 at the plate in Saturday’s game with one RBI and a walk to go along with his home run. On the season, he’s batting .500 (five hits in 10 at-bats).

“He’s feeling better and better,” Cora told reporters. “He’s on pitches, the walk before that [at bat] was very impressive … he’s feeling good. We’ll keep playing him, move him around, and obviously take care of him when we have to.”

On top of his already impressive day offensively, Campbell showcased his versatility on defense, playing in the outfield after starting the previous two games at second base. The young righty nearly came away with a highlight reel grab in left field, but the ball popped out of his glove after he hit the ground.

“I threw my hands up, I thought he caught it … for a guy that’s played second base the last two days and then left field today, almost made an unbelievable play,” Red Sox starter Walker Buehler said of Campbell. “The heartbeat and the brain of him being here right now, I think he’s doing well.”

Campbell was the only one of Boston’s top three prospects to make the team’s Opening Day roster, and it appears the Red Sox have already seen enough of the young slugger’s potential to make him a mainstay for years to come.
