The future of the Red Sox’ lineup flexed their muscles Thursday night in Port Charlotte, Florida, as Boston’s “Big Three” prospects in Roman Anthony, Kristian Campbell, and Marcelo Mayer all homered during the Red Sox’ Spring Breakout game against the Rays.
While Boston eventually came up short, 7-5, to Tampa in the annual prospect showcase, the Red Sox’ projected pillars for the future all impressed at Charlotte Sports Park.
Campbell (MLB.com’s No. 7 prospect) and Mayer (No. 12 prospect) kicked things off in the top of the third inning — with Campbell swatting an opposite-field, two-run homer to right off of Tampa prospect Trevor Harrison. In the very next-at bat, Mayer bashed a pitch from Harrison over the right-field fence for back-to-back homers.

But it was Anthony — MLB.com’s No. 2 prospect — who capped things off in the fifth inning with a moonshot into right. As one fan in the stands chanted “overrated!”, Anthony drilled an offering 434 feet that cleared the stadium’s concourse and bounced off the roof of another building.

“Yeah, it’s not the first time, I’ve heard that this spring. It’s always funny, but that’s part of it,” Anthony said of the heckling when asked by Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald, adding: “If they’re saying something — it’s always a good thing if you’re relevant.”
“That was sick,” Mayer added of Anthony’s well-timed home run.
While it remains to be seen when Campbell and the rest of the “Big Three” will step up to the plate at Fenway Park this season, Red Sox senior director of player development Brian Abraham told Cerullo that the Spring Breakout offers a great platform for Boston’s next wave of talent to build some momentum heading into regular-season play.
“A couple of guys in big league camp, some guys coming over from the (Dominican Republic) for the first time, A-ball all the way up to Triple-A, so to be able to play on the same team is pretty cool,” Abraham told Cerullo. “And obviously under the lights, in front of a lot of fans, on TV, those opportunities don’t come around too often when you’re in the minor leagues. So it’s really special, really awesome opportunity that Major League Baseball has provided us.”
