More with the Red Sox
At spring training Thursday morning in Fort Myers, right-handed pitcher Walker Buehler responded to questions about the Red Sox’ new addition, infielder Alex Bregman.
“Ever since I’ve seen him play he’s been one of the better players on the field,” said Buehler. “Starting at LSU as a freshman, so you know he’s continued that over and is a very confident player. He’s a guy I think will handle Boston well hopefully and has played really well at Fenway. So yeah I’m excited.”
Bregman played for LSU between 2013 and 2015 before being drafted as the second overall pick in the MLB draft. Buehler played for Vanderbilt for the same years that Bregman was at LSU. The two teams matched up in 2013 and 2014.
As a Tiger, Bregman started every game he played in as a shortstop. He batted .337, which included 56 doubles (tying him for 8th place in LSU history), 21 home runs, 48 RBIs, as well as 66 stolen bases. He also committed nine errors in 359 chances. He also received many accolades, including being a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award in 2015.
“I think every guy that we’ve added this year has some level of [intensity]. I think obviously he’s got the championship pedigree and a lot of success in Houston and even in LSU. So yeah I think the more you can kind of go through those experiences and playing the playoffs and playing big games, you know, it carries over,” said Buehler.
“Ever since I’ve seen him play, he’s been one of the better players on the field—starting at LSU as a freshman. … I’m excited about it.”

Bregman has played for the Astros from 2016 to 2024. During his tenure, he batted a .272 and had 1,132 hits, 191 home runs, 663 RBIs and 42 stolen bases. The Astros won two World Series during his time there, in 2017 and 2022.
With Bregman’s reputation of having a temper, Buehler answered the question if he had ever seen his “competitive” side.
“I haven’t really played against him that much in Houston. But you know, you see it on TV and kind of in the way he carries himself and, you know, I think that’s gonna be a great thing here.”
