Former Red Sox catcher Kevin Plawecki announces retirement
"There comes a time where all good things must come to an end."
Catcher Kevin Plawecki, who spent three seasons with the Red Sox from 2020-2022, announced his retirement Saturday via Instagram.
Plawecki, 33, had a nine-year Major League career with the Mets, Indians, Red Sox, and Rangers. He was a .235 hitter who was known for his acumen behind the plate.
Part of his legacy with the Red Sox is choosing the song “Dancing On My Own” as his walk-up song, which the team later adopted as one of its unofficial celebratory anthems. He was known as a positive presence in the locker room.
“There comes a time where all good things must come to an end,” Plawecki wrote. “As a player, it’s time for me to move on. I’ve been blessed to play this game my whole life including the last 13 years professionally. I cannot thank every team enough for the opportunities to wear their uniforms. I did not take it for granted.”
Plawecki said he tried to stay true to himself over the years. He thanked his family and more and shared that he’s accepted a job with the Padres as a coach in minor league player development.
He closed by saying, “The best is yet to come! See y’all at a stadium near you!’
Former Red Sox teammate Kiké Hernández wrote: “Love you Plaw dawg! You’re for sure gonna be a player’s coach!!”
